Q: What is semi-permanent make-up?
A: Semi-permanent make-up has a few titles that differ from place to
place. In the US it is known as Derma Graphics, Permanent make-up or Cosmetic
Tattooing. Emphasising that traces of he pigment will last in the skin indefinitely,
even if the cosmetic effect will fade gradually within 1-5 years due to exposure to
light, the colour that was used (lighter = fast fading), skin pH and skin rejuvenation.
In the UK the same procedure is called semi-permanent make-up, choosing to
emphasise the maintenance that will be required to keep the cosmetic result at its best.
I choose to call it Semi To Permanent make-up because after your second or third
touch-up (approx. 18 months apart), the cosmetic result will last forever.
However, though the practice of semi-permanent make-up resembles a traditional
tattoo, the equipment, pigments and technician training is different. Semi-permanent
make-up at its best is performed with digital state of the art equipment, entering the
skin with skilful delicacy at the proper upper surface depth. Traditional tattoos will
implant the pigment deeper and will always remain there with minimum fading. The
difference in equipment and technique that was designed to treat the human face combined
with experience and talent, can produce any result from the most subtle and natural to
dramatic. Millions of women around the world enjoy the benefits of this remarkable
treatment that I believe should be within the reach of everyone that needs it whether
the reason is correction or perfection.
Q: Semi Permanent or Permanent?
A: Many times I have been asked about the differences between these types of
makeup. The reason behind the confusion is the different name given to the same
procedure in different countries. In the United States the procedure is called Permanent
Makeup or Permanent Dermagraphics or Micropigmentation. In Europe and the UK it is
called Semi Permanent Makeup.
Real Semi Permanent Makeup will not penetrate the upper layer of the skin, the
epidermis, and will disappear with skin rejuvenation within 28 days. Any procedure that
will last longer is Permanent Makeup and the micropigment is implanted through the
epidermis into the dermis. Microscopic fragments of this pigment will stay in the skin
indefinitely even if the colour is unseen to the naked eye. That's why in the USA the
procedure is called Permanent Makeup.
The reason the procedure is still named Semi Permanent in the UK is because the
Legislator chose to emphasise the ongoing, repetitive maintenance required. Whereas, in
the USA, more emphasis was placed on the permanent nature of the procedure.
How Long Does It Last?
Anything from one year to a lifetime. It depends on the following factors:
" The colour used " Skin and blood type " Depth of procedure and
needle thickness " Smoking / alcohol / medication intake " Exposure to sun /
light " Area treated
Conclusion
In general, I call the procedure "Semi to Permanent Makeup" and explain to
all my clients the permanent aspect of the procedure and recommend maintenance every
year to 18 months in order to preserve the vivid and pure line and colour. However, some
clients like the colour to fade and they enjoy longer periods between maintenance. That
is why Semi to Permanent Makeup is a procedure that should be carried out only after
full consultation and consideration.
Good luck!
Q; Who needs it?
A: The ultimate reasoning behind the treatment is the person's wish to look
better or to preserve and enhance their natural beauty around and through their busy
modern life. Facial imperfections and asymmetrical features are very
common. It can be asymmetrical lips: usually very fine and narrow upper lip and
thicker lower lip or vice versa. Cleft lip or lack of definition around the
vermilion border and bow. It can be the lack or insufficient eyebrow hair often
caused by over-plucking, or medical reasons. Eyes can appear too small or too
close and eyelashes can seem dull. Upper eyelids can look heavy, creating an older and
undesired appearance.
As we age, we lose the natural facial pigment definition, especially around the lips.
The gravity takes its toll on skin and our general appearance and we still look good, it
just takes a longer time in front the mirror.. .and we still want to have a career, a
family life and be desired. All of that during our seemingly impossible, stressful and
modern lifestyles - we all need a little help.
Together we can stop time, restore and enhance your natural beauty!
